Urban Hope launched the Alexander House Scholars program in the fall of 2021. Up to seven students are accepted each academic year as Alexander House Scholars. Scholars reside in the Alexander House in the Walltown neighborhood of Durham, NC. Each accepted scholar is extended a 10 month invitation to participate in the Alexander House Scholars program.

Alexander House Scholar applicant requirements:

  • 18-26 years old

  • Intention to be enrolled as a full time or part time undergraduate or graduate student at Durham Tech, NCCU, or Duke for the 2024/2025 academic year. Enrolled in a trade/vocational school or program full time or part time? Working full time or part time and considering going back to school? You are welcome to apply!

  • Complete and submit application while spaces remain! We will update our capacity here or you may email info@urbanhope.us to inquire about availability. CURRENT STATUS: Accepting applications - program spaces available

  • In-person or video conference interview

Programmatic components include:

  • House Covenant and Community Standards

  • Mentorship

  • Structured individualized support

  • Community service with partner organizations. Possible activities may include:

    • Rec basketball coach

    • Afterschool tutor

    • DPS volunteer classroom assistant

    • Amy E Kelly Foundation intern

    • Bible study

  • Participation in UH/Alexander House Scholars program fundraising event

Cost

  • $2,000 fixed cost per semester with one academic year (10 month) commitment

    1. Paid in advance and in full for each semester (highly preferred) other payment options available on an individualized basis

    2. Housing costs eligible to be covered by student financial aid

Where will I live?

You will live in the Walltown neighborhood of Durham, NC in The Alexander House with other Alexander House Scholars.

How does it all work?

  • April 1 - May 1 - Reapplication for current Alexander House Scholars window open

  • May 1 - until - General application window open for prospective Alexander House Scholars / Interviews scheduled until available program spaces are filled

  • June 1 - until - Non refundable deposit due for accepted applicants*

  • June 1 - July 31 - Remaining balance for 1st semester due*

  • First week August (Exact dates TBD) - Move in!

What if I am concerned about finances?

Here’s the deal:

  • Make sure you have completed your FAFSA and have been accepted and enrolled as a full time undergraduate or graduate student at an Alexander House Scholars eligible school (see requirement section at top of page)

  • Start developing a plan now to be financially prepared to accept an invitation to become an Alexander House Scholar

  • Payment due dates for Alexander House Scholars happen before most schools distribute financial aid

  • You may need to:

    • Pay out of pocket for acceptance deposit and remaining 1st semester balance

    • Use 1st semester financial aid received to cover Alexander House Scholars expenses for 2nd semester

    • Save 2nd semester financial aid to secure a potential spot to return for a second year as an Alexander House Scholar

  • Please do not look at the $2,000 per semester cost as a barrier. Alexander House Scholars staff are willing to help you develop a plan to meet your financial obligations as a scholar.

What if I need housing for 12 months?

Alexander House Scholars is designed as a 10 month program. However, we do offer 2 month summer extensions by invitation. Every Alexander House Scholar is offered housing for 10 months.
